How in the world is my baby ONE? This last year has been a year full of constant change and adjusting as he continued to grow and learn. Although some days were tough, and seemed to drag on, other days flew by and somehow, here we are with a one year old.

I always loved cake smash sessions; I thought they were such a fun way to celebrate the first birthday and documented such a special season. However, I didn’t realize how much these would mean to me, until I was a mom documenting my own baby having cake for the first time.

When parents opt to do a cake smash questions, I get a few common questions:

  1. Do you have any recommendations on where to order a smash cake?
-I often just recommend Publix! Their cakes taste amazing & they’re not too expensive even if you’re just getting the small cake smash. Also, if you decide to get a large cake from them for your party, they include the cake smash free! Another great thing with Publix smash cakes is that they often are round and on a round base… this allows us to use a cake stand if you wish :)

  2. Do you do props? Should I bring props?
-As you can see below, I keep props to a bare minimum. A simple, sweet felt ball banner, special cake topper, and coordinating cake stand.

  3. Should I coordinate the cake smash session details to the party theme?
-totally up to you! I’ve seen both done. For me, I was doing a fun monsters theme for Mason’s birthday as he showed so much interest in the book, “Never Touch A Monster”. However, I didn’t want to have a monster theme for his cake smash shoot. I wanted to keep it simple, timeless, and classic. Something that in the end I would want to display in my home year-round and didn’t follow a theme.
-With all of that said, it is up to you if you keep with the theme! If you do, you can include a banner with the colors coordinating to the party, a themed cake, and could even do a shirt or little outfit that went along with your theme.

Never hesitate to reach out to me with ideas for your session. I’m happy to talk about options and see what you really envision to do with your images so that you cherish them for years to come!
